August 26, 2016 – With breast augmentation once again claiming the number one spot on the list of cosmetic surgeries performed in 2015, it isn’t suprising that there are certain methods most surgeons prefer to use. These preferred breast augmentation methods were detailed in a recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and anyone considering having this procedure should discuss them during their initial consult with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon.

The report states that most cosmetic surgeons prefer round, silicone implants witha smooth surface as opposed to the teardrop implants or textured implants.

Incision location preferred by most cosmetic surgeons for breast implants is beneath the breast and underneath the existing muscle.

As far as implant size, the ASPS report states that 300 cc to 350 cc is the most commonly used. And even with the advances in 3D imaging, most surgeons still determine the best implant fit for patients by using sizing implant forms.

Lastly, while fat grafting has gained a lot of attention in the past few years, cosmetic surgeons haven’t exactly embraced it for use in most breast augmentation. The report states that some surgeons have expressed concern that fat grafting can make it more difficult to detect breast cancer during normal screening procedures.

Around 280,000 breast augmentation procedures were preformed last year, and new techniques and methods are being developed regularly. It’s important to fine a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who is experienced in the procedure you’re considering, as well as one you are comfortable with so you can ask questions and discuss these breast augmentation methods and make sure they are right for you.
