October 15, 2012 – We know that body contouring is a big segment of cosmetic surgery in the U.S. We also know that liposuction has long been the go-to cosmetic surgery procedure for those who want to lose areas of fat that haven’t responded to diet or exercising. But a recent article in the Daily Mail has the head of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), Rajiv Grover, predicting that the popularity of liposuction will be sucked away by newer body contouring techniques that require less downtime.

Of course nobody can predict the future, and cosmetic surgery trends come and go. But it is a fact that these days, more men and women prefer procedures that are less invasive and have minimal downtime. Our last post talked about some of the laser and ultrasound options for body contouring, and another new one mentioned in the DM article is Med Contour.

According to the article, Med Contour uses high-frequency ultrasound waves to heat and liquefy fat cells. The patient has to lay while the ultrasound waves are delivered over the target areas with the device. Then the patient is massaged with another device to promote the flushing of the fat. Patients also wear a sort of inflatable suit after treatment to supposedly help the fat to be flushed out via the lymphatic system.

One Med Contour treatment takes about an hour and five to six sessions are recommended by the manufacturer. One patient quoted in the article claims to have lost 1.5 inches around her waist after only one treatment.

But one point that the article brings up is no matter what type of laser body contouring treatment is used, is the liquefied fat really is flushed out of the patient’s body? There is some speculation as to whether it really is or if it just moves to a different body area and possibly causes scar tissue.

If you’re considering having some type of non-invasive body contouring laser treatment, find a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who has experience with lasers and who can answer all of your questions and preferably provide patient testimonials and before-and-after pictures of previous patients.
