Chicago Plastic Surgery
Chicago plastic surgery is becoming more common place among both men and women. With new techniques, quicker procedures and in many cases immediately visible improvements in appearance, the number of people opting for plastic surgery has been on the rise for some time now. While there are many cases in which plastic surgery is performed to repair damage due to injury, illness or defects, there are also many types of procedures that are done strictly to enhance personal appearance.
Top Five Plastic Surgery Procedures
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the top five procedures are liposuction, nose reshaping, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery and tummy tucks. In previous years facelifts would have been in the top five, but the emergence of Botox injections to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines has become a more commonly used method for many patients rather than the more involved surgical procedure of a facelift.
If you're considering liposuction, you need to be as informed as possible about the different methods, results that can be expected and recovery time. With liposuction, fat is removed in a process often called body contouring. It is generally used to remove fat from areas of the body where exercise and dieting doesn't bring the desired results. These areas could include the hips, buttocks, abdomen, thighs, upper arms and even the neck and under the chin.
The basic procedure of liposuction involves making small incisions and inserting a hollow tube or cannula that is attached to a surgical vacuum. The patient usually is only given a local anesthetic and maybe a sedative. A solution meant to partially dissolve the fat and numb the area is also injected into the portion of the body to be liposuctioned.
Another method of liposuction uses ultrasonic vibration to dissolve the fat cells before suctioning them out of the body. While the ultrasonic method is quicker, it can cause more dimpling than the original, longer method. With PAL or power assisted liposuction, the cannula or vacuum rotates or oscillates and this also dissolves the fat and makes it easier to remove.
Liposuction will cause some irregularities and dimpling in the skin as well as bruising, so the actual visual results may not be obvious for anywhere from a few weeks to even up to a year, depending on how large an area you had done, how many treatments or how much fat was removed. It's also important to remember that liposuction can't be used as a general weight loss remedy. This form of plastic surgery is only used for contouring and should only be performed on patients who aren't terribly overweight and are in good health otherwise.
The next most popular form of Chicago plastic surgery is nose reshaping, technically referred to as rhinoplasty. There can be medical reasons for having plastic surgery done on your nose, such as after an accident or to correct a breathing problem. But most patients simply want a different shape to their nose.
This Chicago plastic surgery procedure can involve a fairly routine operation of removing some cartilage, skin or reshaping the septum. Rhinoplasty can also be very involved, with removal of bone and completely reshaping or rebuilding the just tip of the nose or the entire nose itself. There will normally be some swelling, bruising and the patient will have to possibly have their nose packed with sterile gauze and wear a splint to retain the new shape as the nose heals.
Number three on the Chicago plastic surgery popularity list is breast augmentation. Again, this procedure can be done for medical reasons such as reconstruction after a mastectomy. But mostly women opt to have their breasts enlarged for reasons of appearance. Besides an increase in size, it could also be to correct an uneven appearance when one breast is noticeably smaller than the other.
There are two types of breast implants available, which are silicone and saline. The silicone implants are usually the preferred choice because they look, move and feel more like natural breast tissue. Silicone implants have come a long ways since the first ones were created and the chances of developing a leak are minimal anymore.
Saline breast implants have an advantage over silicone in that they can be inserted empty and folded up from a smaller incision around your naval. The implant is then filled via a small tube that is then removed. Scaring is minimal.
With silicone implants, the usual incision sites are just below your breast, in your armpit or a small curved incision below your areola. The incisions are larger because the silicone implants are already filled, but the scars will fade and are usually hidden by a bikini.
Eyelid surgery is performed to correct a sleepy appearance due to droopy eyelids. Sometimes patients decide to have eyelid surgery along with a facelift. Any excess fat buildup beneath your eyes will be removed along with any sagging skin. This can also help eliminate dark circles beneath the eyes. Scars will be minimal as the incisions are made in the crease of your upper eyelid.
Tummy tucks or abdominoplasty is another plastic surgery procedure that is popular. It is used to rid the patient of extra fat and skin in the waist and stomach and also the muscles of the abdomen will be pulled up and tightened during the operation. This procedure can be a good option for women who can't reduce their waist size by exercise or dieting. A tummy tuck can also help women who have stretch marks from pregnancy. Tummy tucks aren't however a good solution for a person with a lot of excess weight in that area. Because there will be a portion of skin removed from below the naval and down, there will be some scaring that occurs. You could also decide to have a mini tummy tuck where less skin is removed, the incisions are shorter and liposuction is used to remove fat from the abdomen.
