Chicago Rhinoplasty Surgeon

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, has become one of the most often performed types of cosmetic surgery.  Many people who have nose reshaping done do so because of a medical reason such as breathing difficulties or because of damage due to an injury he or she sustained.  But more often it is because of a desire to enhance personal appearance that men and women opt for rhinoplasty.

Types Of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can consist of either fairly simple reshaping with minimal cartilage removal or it can be extensive with bone and skin removal or complete reconstruction. Because of that, it's important to find a Chicago rhinoplasty surgeon who can answer all your questions about the various procedures.  Many surgeons can also show you a pretty accurate representation of what you will look like after the nose reshaping via computer imaging programs.  This can really help a patient have realistic expectations about how he or she will look after surgery.

Before Rhinoplasty

When you are deciding which Chicago rhinoplasty surgeon to go to, there are some important questions that you need to keep in mind and ask.  You can even make a written list before going to a consultation if you think you might forget something.

Probably the most basic but important thing is to make certain that your rhinoplasty surgeon is certified.  To be Board Certified means that your surgeon is certified with the American Board of Medical Specialties or ABMS.  The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery or ABFPRS certification means that a surgeon has completed his or her residency after medical school, passed a two day exam and successfully completed a minimum of 100 facial surgeries in the past two years that were reviewed by peers.  There is also certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Otolaryngology.

It's Good To Ask About...

It's also a good idea to ask your surgeon how many years he or she has been doing rhinoplasty surgery and what hospital your surgeon is affiliated with. You should feel comfortable talking with your rhinoplasty surgeon about what options are available for you and how long the procedure will take.  Find out what discomfort can be expected afterwards and if you will have to take days off work or schedule limited activity during your recovery time. It's also important to find out what risks are involved with your procedure.

If your rhinoplasty isn't justified for medical reasons and it is purely cosmetic, it's doubtful that it will be covered by your health insurance plan. Since cosmetic surgery can be expensive, find out what your procedure is expected to cost and whether it will need to be paid in full immediately afterwards.  Some surgeons will work with you on a payment plan.  Be sure to get everything in writing and also be clear about whether or not return visits will be necessary and if those are an additional office call fee or included in the base bill.
