Fraxel Laser Treatment
What Is Fraxel Laser Treatment?
Imperfections in the skin are caused by a variety of factors - acne, natural aging, sun damage and stretch marks to name a few. And as you age, your skin becomes less elastic and more prone to discoloration as well as tiny lines and wrinkles.
Fraxel laser treatment can reduce these imperfections giving the skin a smoother healthier appearance. Skin becomes rejuvenated with a softer, more youthful and refreshed texture. Fraxel laser is FDA approved for treatment of skin anomalies such as sun spots, acne scarring, stretch marks and facial fine lines and wrinkles.
How Does It Work?
Fraxel laser treatment combines the technology of laser energy and the body’s own wound healing response. The laser treatment penetrates the targeted skin surface, creating tiny areas of thermal damage to the epidermis and dermis just below. In response, your body’s natural healing ability is stimulated to produce collagen and replace the damaged skin layers, regenerating new smoother skin. Results are often immediately visible and can continue to improve for about 6 months post treatment.
Depending on your medical history, skin health and desired outcomes, your practitioner will determine the size and depth of skin areas to be treated. The treatments are completed in an outpatient setting, often a doctor’s office or laser surgery center. A topical anesthetic is applied to the targeted areas, requiring about 60 minutes for activation, with each actual laser treatment lasting approximately 30 minutes. During the treatments, you may experience heated pinpricking sensations across the targeted skin areas.
What Can I Expect Post Treatment?
After treatment the affected areas may have minimal swelling and blotchy redness for one to three days. Makeup may be applied within three to four days of treatment, depending on the healing progress. Mineral based makeups are recommended. The treated areas will need protection from sun exposure for approximately 3 months after the procedure. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended as well as use of wide brim hats and clothing cover-ups. Patients may resume light activity after one to three days and normal activity within one to six weeks post treatments. Strenuous activity should be avoided for up to six weeks to allow the body time to properly heal.
How Much Can I Expect To Pay?
Fraxel laser is a cosmetic procedure and most insurance companies will not cover the treatments, unless there are valid medical reasons. The average cost is $1,000.00 per treatment, with about three to five treatments recommended. Depending on the surgeon or facility you choose, some offer packages of three to five treatments with a cost reduction built in, so be sure and ask your preferred provider about all their treatment package options.
Is Fraxel Laser Treatment A Good Choice For Me?
Men and women in general good health of all ages are ideal candidates, although those with current acne outbreaks should not have this done until their acne subsides.
