June 17, 2013 – The annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons report released back in March stated that breast augmentation accounted for 17% of all cosmetic surgery procedures performed last year (2012). The report also said that there has been an amazing 226.8% increase in breast augmentations performed in the U.S. when 1997 statistics are compared to 2012 numbers.

Silicone breast implants are still favored over saline breast implants by a margin of 72% to 28%. T growing popularity of cohesive silicone gel breast implants will probably push those numbers even higher next year.

So what age group of women are having the most breast augmentation procedures? According to the ASPS report, women from age 19 to 34 had 52.2% of all breast augmentations last year (2012).

The number two age group who had the most breast augmentations in 2012 were women aged 35 to 50. They accounted for 37.8% of the total number of breast augmentations last year.

What about cost? The report states that the average cost of breast augmentation in the U.S. is about $3,543. That can vary widely, with location and cosmetic surgeon experience being big factors. It’s important to remember that the amount a cosmetic surgeon quotes you may only be his or her fee. Add in fees for the anesthesia, hospital or surgical center, medical supplies, type of breast implant and follow-up visits and the total can run anywhere from $3,500 to $10,000. As crazy as it sounds, also remember to make sure the cosmetic surgery cost you’re quoted is for both breasts, not just one.

Some good tips to remember from the ASPS include making sure you have breast augmentation because you want to, not because someone else wants you to. You should find a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who is willing to spend enough consultation time to answer your questions and make sure you’re a good candidate for the procedure. Computer imaging software can also be helpful and allow you to visualize how you’ll look after the procedure and what size breast implants will look best for your build. And bringing a spouse or close friend to your consultation can also be helpful.
