August 28, 2012 – A lot has been said about how soft tissue fillers were one of the fastest growing minimally-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures last year (statistics from the ASPS). But not a lot has been said about what you can do to minimize the bruising and swelling that sometimes happens after the injections. Several good tips were recently published in the Miami Herald and reprinted in the ASAPS newsletter, so we thought we’d pass them along to you.

First, try not to have wrinkle treatment with soft tissue fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane or Juvederm less than two weeks before a big event like a wedding, class reunion or business meeting. Most swelling or bruising should happen within the first few days and resolve after two weeks.

Since bruising is caused by the injection damaging blood vessels, always find an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist to give the injections.

Another tip is to avoid taking any over-the-counter pain relievers that contain aspirin and ibuprofin. Those tend to make your blood thinner and make bruising more severe, so stop taking them 10 days before your injections. Acetaminophen doesn’t have the same effect, though, so it’s generally safe to take before dermal injections.

Prescription medications that thin the blood (Coumadin and Heparin) will also increase bruising but shouldn’t be stopped without your primary doctor’s approval.

According to the article, Vitamin E, ginseng, gingko biloba, omega-3, St. John’s Wort and green tea will also make any bruising worse. You should stop taking or drinking them 10 days before your cosmetic surgery procedure and have no alcohol at least 24 hours before the procedure.

A few supplements can help fade bruising. Those are arnica and bromelain. The article advises that you take 3 arnica tablets every 6 hours after your injections until the bruises are gone and take 500mg of bromelain 3 times per day for 3 days after your injections.

Other tips to lessen bruising after soft-tissue filler injections include using ice after the injections and keeping your head elevated when you sleep for a few nights after your injections.

If you can follow some of these tips about how to lessen bruising after soft-tissue filler injections, you’ll be wrinkle-free, bruise-free and looking your best in record time.
