October 3, 2013 – Would you let your hair stylist perform a chemical peel or laser skin treatment on your face? How about getting Botox injections at your local beauty salon? You may think the answer to those questions is an automatic no, but many people are tempted to have those cosmetic procedures done at spas. Unfortunately, according to a recent article in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) newsletter, the person performing the procedure at some spas may not have any more training in cosmetic surgery than your beautician does.
To be fair, there are some medical spas that can provide these cosmetic surgery procedures in a professional setting with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon. But many do not, and that’s where the problems start. Even minimally-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures can go wrong if performed incorrectly, and even doctors who have no experience in cosmetic surgery or aren’t trained and board-certified in that specialty shouldn’t be performing cosmetic surgery.
The law varies from state to state, but many medical spas can legally allow personnel to administer cosmetic surgery as long as a doctor supervises the procedure. But what you may not know is that the doctor often doesn’t even have to be physically present.
The ASAPS article states that some medical spas go as far as offering invasive cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks and
breast augmentation. Those cosmetic surgery procedures need to be performed by an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon in a medical setting with all of the proper equipment and have emergency facilities and equipment on site in the event of complications.
The best advice we can give you, and we can’t stress it enough, is to leave cosmetic surgery to the professionals. Going to a medical spa where procedures are performed by untrained, unlicensed personnel may save you money up front, but it could cost you more in terms of your health or revisionary surgery in the end.
